The annual Gridwood Forest Fair event is right around the corner. Held every July at the Girdwood fairgrounds since 1975, the Forest Fair is a weekend of arts, crafts, food and fun. For everyone to enjoy themselves and be safe at the same time, it’s important to remember the importance of hydration. Walking around under the sun can deplete the body’s water levels, so make sure you stay hydrated to maximize your enjoyment at the event, while minimizing the risks of dehydration.

Stay Hydrated

Your friends at Midtown Anchorage urgent care center, Primary Care Associates, would like you to keep in mind the following hydration tips:

Many people think that they should only hydrate themselves when they’re already at the event. However, you need to ensure you’re properly hydrated BEFORE attending the event to stay at your peak from beginning to end. While drinking water is the common way to replenish the body’s lost liquids, you may also gain some much needed water from eating foods that have high water content, such as fruits, vegetables, yogurt and milk. Unfortunately, beer and liquor don’t count because they can actually dehydrate you as they need water to metabolize in the body.

Avoid drinking too much water at one time because that can lead to cramps later. It’s better to ingest water in small amounts at frequent intervals to provide your body with the steady stream of hydration it needs to keep going all day.

If you notice that you’re sweating a lot, it could already be a sign of dehydration. Take a break and drink some water immediately. It’s important to pay attention to your body and understand when it’s in need. Do the same if you’re feeling weak or too hot.

Just as you need to hydrate before the event, it’s equally important to do so after the event as well. Along with water, rehydrating with sports drinks and fruit juices is a great idea to replenish the sodium and electrolytes lost from sweating. Oranges and bananas, in particular, are excellent fruits to eat after a physical activity because they are rich in nutrients that aid in rehydration.

If someone in your party experiences the ill effects of exhaustion and dehydration, it’s a good idea to take him or her immediately to a provider of urgent care in Midtown Anchorage, such as Primary Care Associates, for a thorough evaluation of his or her condition.
